At reACTION we consider ourselves to be a modern progressive martial arts club. Our core martial art is Jiu Jitsu but we also offer specialist training in other disciplines to enable our students to develop a wide range of abilities. Currently we are lucky enough to offer additional classes in Stickfighting (based on influences from a range of Filipino systems) Krav Maga and Aikido.
reACTION
does not
practise in a full contact environment as it is our goal to enable any
person
to develop skills that may benefit them in a self defense situation, we
believe
that to expect ordinary people to undertake constant full contact
training is
completely unrealistic and that there are significant benefits to our
reduced
contact level of training.
We
offer
distinctly different learning opportunities to our childrens and adults
classes
but the club strives to maintain a united team dynamic across the board.
Unlike
some
martial arts all our students practise all their techniques using an
opponent,
this means our students are well used to adapting their techniques
based on the
person they are working with. We
believe
that this versatility is essential to our students should they ever
need to
apply their knowledge in a defense situation.
Jiu JitSU
Jiu Jitsu is a very comprehensive martial art. It provides self-defense techniques for all reach distances (kicking, hand strikes, trapping, throwing and ground work) as well as defenses against defenses against attackers with weapons. At reACTION we have an evolving system, having borrowed techniques from other systems such as Karate, Boxing, Aikido, Muay Thai and Judo, as well Classical Jiu Jitsu which has been around for hundreds of years.
STICK FIGHTING
The Filipino martial arts (FMA), known as Kali, Eskrima and
Arnis are weapon based systems.
Unlike other arts, which may teach empty hands first then progress to
weapons, the FMA approach is consistency of movement across all
categories of combat. The student learns to move competently with a
weapon, gaining fluidity, mobility and a greater understanding of
distance and timing than is often achieved with empty hands alone.
Without being aware of it, the student is simultaneously learning to
use impact and edged weapons as well and bare hands.
FMA systems often incorporate many types of weapons - short, long,
edged, impact, flexible, single and double. They often contain advanced
empty hand methods of striking, locking, throwing and grappling.
At
reACTION our stickfighting classes will be focussed on learning
attacking and defending skills using single and double stick allowing
the students to safely participate in stick sparring matches.
KRAV MAGA
The techniques of Krav Maga were formed by Imi Lichtenfeld, an
outstanding wrestler and boxer who modified his techniques for
practical fighting in order to lead a group of athletes who defended
Jews against fascist thugs in Slovakia in the 1930's. He eventually
wound up as the Chief Instructor for physical fitness and hand-to-hand
combat for the Israel Defence Force where he taught his style of
martial art.
Krav Maga is designed to be nothing but a practical means of street
defence, one of the central concepts being that techniques should flow
from a person's instinctive reactions, rather than teaching the student
to control their natural reactions as most martial arts do, and thus is
learned more quickly than other martial arts.
AIKIDO
Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba with the express
purpose of
allowing its practitioners to defend against any attack without
seriously injuring the attacker. Instead, the Aikido
practitioner
shifts her or his body to avoid the attack and guides the attacker's
body to use their own force against them. Throws are used,
many
of which will cause the attacker to land flat on their back or some
other way that could hurt them badly. Also, locks are used which can
potentially break the attacker's joints.
One of the main
benefits of Aikido is that being comprised entirely of circular
techniques it can be utilised by anyone, no matter how lacking in
muscular strength.

your first session.....
At reACTION
your safety is our first priority.
Despite the combat based nature of martial arts training
we want all
our students to
be safe and comfortable at all times.
Because of this your first few lessons are likely to
involve tumbling
drills and best practise techniques to ensure you can train without
being a hazard to yourself or your training partners.
Prior
to
beginning training we request that you inform us of any pre-existing
issues
which may influence your training experience and also further contact
details
(for emergency use)
Untill you
decide to join we do not require students to wear a gi, just normal
sportswear
will suffice – we do generally recommend long pants rather than shorts
for
personal comfort (Our Krav Maga and stickfighting classes require no
fancy uniforms, just comfortable exercise attire)
Kids Class
The main focus
of our kids class is entirely on sports based skills, students learn
punching,
kicking, throwing and wrestling to enable them to compete in a
tournament
safely. To help
maintain interest our
grades are broken down into achievable subcategories and a badge is
awarded for
passing each level.
As
a new class option in 2010 reACTION now offers a specialised self
defense to teach more direct self defense principles and provide more
variety to our students.
Our adults
class begins with an induction process to help explain the sporting
requirements of martial arts and ensure you can train safely with other
club
members. Upon
completion of this process
you will move onto a more comprehensive system.
reACTION offers a range of classes to enable students to focus on the
spects of martial arts training most relevant to them. Please
see
our timetable page for more detail on classes.
